A Holistic Approach to Sustainability

Chiesi Italia’s Vision & Best Practices

In an industry often dominated by the bottom line, Chiesi stands out. The Italian based pharmaceutical company places sustainability at the center of their business. On Monday October 6, Chief Executive Officer Raffaello Innocenti spoke about the company’s ongoing sustainability initiatives as part of the Palazzi Community Center’s Made in Florence Series – a collection aimed at highlighting Italian-based artists, companies and individuals. The event showcased the company’s commitment to sustainability to about 30 community members during a presentation in the PCC garden.

Founded in 1935, the Parma-based pharmaceutical company is a global leader who operates in over thirty countries. Chiesi maintains a strong connection to its Italian roots through its sustainability efforts and continued investment in local communities. In the 2010s, the company began to focus on sustainability as concerns around climate change grew globally. Notably, Chiesi became the first pharmaceutical company to receive a B Corp certification in 2019– a certification given only to companies which uphold strict sustainability standards. Chiesi is also a certified Benefit Corporation– meaning that the company is required to integrate environmental sustainability measures into their bylaws.

During the event, Innocenti highlighted Chiesi’s four pillars of sustainability – patient, people, plane and prosperity. One specific instance of these pillars can be seen through Chiesi’s ongoing efforts to reduce greenhouse gas emission by transitioning to low emission propellants in inhalers and electrifying their vehicle fleet. Through utilizing four principles Chiesi is able to greatly meet the needs of the community they serve in Italy and abroad.

“We are sure that this approach not only increases the benefit for the community, but at the same time, increases the value for us,” Innocenti said.

By promoting corporate volunteering, Chiesi strengthens their relationship with local communities they inhabit.

Although much of his presentation focused on Chiesi’s ongoing efforts, Innocenti was also focused on the road ahead. Innocenti aims to reduce Chiesi’s greenhouse gas emission in the future.

“This means to reach 2055 zero emission that regarding the true scope is one most important aspect,” Innocenti said.

Sustainability is an intrinsic part of Chiesi’s identity and the company strengthens their bonds with local communities through events such as those hosted at the Palazzi Community Center.
