The American Degree, Reimagined Abroad
The American University of Florence Celebrates NECHE Accreditation
On January 23, 2026, history was made in the heart of Italy. A ceremony at Palazzo Borghese celebrated the official accreditation of The American University of Florence (AUF). The event brought together current students, staff, and faculty, along with the AUF's Founder and President, Gabriella Ganugi; the Mayor of Florence, Sara Funaro; and the U.S. Consul General, Daniela Ballard.
Founded in 1997, AUF is now recognized by the New England Commission of Higher Education as an American-Accredited institution, meeting the same standards as an American degree.
Why is this such important information, particularly for American students?
Well, it's a story as old as time. Senior year of high school arrives, and students begin the search for the home of the most transformative and exciting four years of their lives. Naturally, many students tend to lean toward out-of-state schools; away from the people and places they have been around since childhood for this next stage of life. Out of state options offer a priceless opportunity: to become oneself in a setting unlike anything one’s ever experienced. Yet, unfortunately, there is a price for such endeavors--and a large one, at that. According to an expert verified source, the typical difference in tuition alone from in-state versus out-of-state options is around nineteen thousand USD per year (Bankrate). So, for many students, affording such a choice means either taking out mass amounts of loans, or transitioning from a community college to such an option. Yet, both of these choices include great either financial or experiential sacrifices that may lead students to simply remain in-state.
However, what if there was another option? One that may provide the greatest adventure of not just a few years, but a lifetime? An option with tuition costs comparable or even less than a United States typical in-state cost? Where one could not only explore a new state, but the world, all while still receiving a completely American-Accredited degree?
Thanks to the new accreditation of The American University of Florence, such an incredible prospect is possible. Not only does AUF offer the opportunity to achieve one’s degree in a variety of subjects at a low cost, but it offers something USA colleges can’t; the chance for a global education that benefits both personal and career growth. AUF has obtained institutional accreditation from the New England Commission of Higher Education (NECHE), a US-based body that evaluates universities against rigorous academic and governance standards. It is the only institution in all of Italy to accomplish such through NECHE. This makes AUF one of the most prevalent academic institutions outside of the United States, as it holds this unique and rare achievement.
AUF has associate, bachelor, and master degree programs ranging from photography and product design to hospitality and real estate management. And, though their programs themselves will not be shifting, the school is expecting significant changes within the student body. Salvatore Procopio, a staff member in the university's public relations office and organizer of the entire accreditation ceremony, stated, “We will receive more students — but more importantly, we will continue shaping lives.”
He furthered that though the number of pupils are certain to grow, the quality of education and scholarly community will remain personal and close-knit. Specifically, he said that, “Our goal is to keep that level of contact with students.”
This close relationship able to be kept is due to another unique aspect of AUF. That being, its status as a private institution. Procopio noted, “Our system is private, while in Europe the system is mostly public and very large.” This has allowed the university to, “...combine academic excellence with experiential learning and community engagement,” in a way which differs from a typical college education. He added, “You are not just another graduate. You are someone who exposed yourself to the world.”
When asked about the accreditation ceremony itself, Procopio described, “ It's historical... We have been recognized as one of the most important academic institutions outside of the United States.” He furthered that for the ceremony, “Our intention was to communicate who we are — our background, our values, our mission.”
Attended by journalists, politicians, board members of the U.S., and both the Mayor of Florence and U.S. Consul General, it was a large-scale, complex event which required an immense amount of planning. He confessed that, “It was a very challenging project because it was such an important achievement for our community.” Procopio added, “When I saw everything come together at the very end, that [was] the most meaningful moment.” He stated that he, “felt the responsibility of representing our entire community—students, faculty, staff—everyone.” Thankfully, they successfully showcased AUF’s history, mission, and achievements, and it was a celebration the community is sure to not soon forget.
The student body itself is yet another incredible aspect of the educational opportunity available at AUF. As Procopio said, the school is, “...not pretending to create something that is 100% American. [AUF] is open to the world.” With students representing over forty-seven nationalities, there is no shortage of opportunity for networking, growth, and international connection that is sure to outshine any typical collegiate resume. And, the expectations upon students reflect such diversity, as Procopio stated, “Students need to open themselves—not pretend to be local, and not pretend to follow a stereotype.” With the school's emphasis on experiential learning and cultural integration within the local community, “Students learn real things; things they know how to do in real life.”
With real people, real experiences, and a really affordable cost, this makes AUF an extremely desirable place to obtain a higher education. Interested in learning more? Follow the link below to discover AUF's full catalog of certificate & degree programs.
