Tiny Florence: Florence From Below Now on Display

A sneak peak at the summer 2026 photo exhibit!

Beginning from July 16 and open through August 5, the Palazzi Community Center will be unveiling a new Tiny Florence Exhibit inside of its Corridoio Fiorentino. This recurring photography exhibit has functioned as an opportunity for university students to showcase Florence through their personal lens with an emphasis on details throughout the city. Each 6cm x 6cm photo transports the spectator into the mind of the student photographer. No two experiences in Florence are the same, and in that vein, no two pictures are alike. Conceptualized with the goal of rejecting Florence as a performance and embracing it as a personal experience, filled with real people and real emotions, Tiny Florence forces each artist to step outside of the ordinary study abroad experience. The photographers are encouraged to explore their own interests and creative vision, which is what allows this exhibit to continuously evolve over the years.

Contrasting with previous chapters of the Tiny Florence exhibit, this selection highlights the pairing of photography and writing. This classroom blurs the lines between visual and written artforms. Led by professors Sofia Galli and Marco Gualtieri, the Tiny Florence: Photography and Writing class combines poetry and prose produced by the students under guidance of Galli with photography and editing supervised by Gualtieri. Collaboration is essential to innovation and this concept emboldens students to co-create. After photographing, the class analyzed and constructed their own iteration of each piece’s meaning through writing. By sharing work with their peers, students are able to see Florence in various forms, and empower one another to see the city through different eyes and a completely different angle.

Following the creation process, selection of the final gallery setup and pieces was organized by professor Lapo Morgantini’s class, Gallery and Exhibition Curating. Focused on enhancing the theme of Florence from below, the students selected and arranged the art to reflect a pedestrian’s perspective of this historic city.

Organizing the gallery in a way that catches the viewer's eye is the main focus of Morgantini’s students. The black and white photos create an emotional pull to the everyday moments that we might miss in passing.

Join us tonight to celebrate and enjoy the hard work of these students at the Palazzi Community center. Don’t miss the free prosecco and insightful art these students are showcasing.
